Ankle Sprain

A sprained ankle is a very common type of ankle injury. A sprain is stretching and or tearing of ligaments. A sprained ankle is classified into three categories depending on severity.

Treatment of a sprained ankle can be separated into immediate first aid and long term rehabilitation and strengthening.

Rehab SECRETS for this condition are:

  1. Take anti-inflammatory medications as directed by your physician.
  2. Ice to the affected area for 20 minutes as needed.
  3. Compress the swelling in your ankle with the use of a wrap to help reduce and minimize the swelling.
  4. Elevate your foot above the level of your heart.
  5. Decrease painful activity for 2-3 weeks.
  6. Perform ankle/foot pumps and circle (clockwise/counter clockwise) in a pain free range of motion.
  7. Stretching should not increase pain. Stretch in a pain-free range.
  8. If your condition does not improve ask for a referral to Community Rehab Physical Therapy.
